Internship Opportunities in Planetary Science
For undergraduate students
For graduate students
NSF REU Internships
The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) in any of the areas of research funded by the NSF. REUs involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program settings.
NSF provides a website to search through all the opportunites. That site can be cumbersome to navigate, so Trish Beddows at Northwestern University created a crowd-sourced table that is more easy to search
LPI SUPPR Internships
The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) affiliated with NASA's Johnson Space Center supports a Summer Undergraduate Program in Planetary Research (SUPPR). They pair qualified undergraduates with NASA-sponsored planetary geology and geophysics investigators at research locations around the country for eight weeks during the summer. More information can be found here.
NASA internships
The National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) supports undergraduate internships across all of its different centers and facilities. These internships vary considerably in opportunities and experiences, but are listed and searchable on this website. There are some other NASA opportunities listed here.
SSB Space Policy Internships
The Space Studies Board (SSB) of the National Academies supports space policy internships to provide promising undergraduate students with the opportunity to work in the area of civil space research policy in the Nation's capital, under the aegis of the SSB. Interns typically undertake one or more short-term research projects designed to assist with or to enhance ongoing study projects. More information can be found here.
Western University Summer Exploration Internships
The Institute for Earth and Space Exploration Western University in London, Canada hosts interns to carry out either individual or team-based research projects. More information can be found here.
NASA internships
The National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) supports graduate internships across all of its different centers and facilities. These internships vary considerably in opportunities and experiences, but are listed and searchable on this website.
NASA Science Mission Design Schools
NASA Science Mission Design Schools are 3-month-long career development experiences for doctoral students, recent Ph.D.s, postdocs and junior faculty who have a strong interest in science-driven robotic space exploration missions. More information can be found here.
NASA Astrobiology Summer Schools
NASA's Astrobiology Institute sponsors a number of summer and winter schools. More information can be found here.

Keck Visiting Scholar Program
The Keck Visiting Scholar Program is designed to connect early career scientists to the technology, operation and science of the Keck Observatory. The program is aimed at graduate students and post-docs seeking to enhance their careers through an observatory hands-on experience working directly with a Keck Observatory scientist. More information can be foudn here.
